German Cockroach (Blattella germanica), Oriental Cockroach (Blatta orientalis)

One of the very few pests that are just not tolerated within British society wether it be in the domestic environment and the commercial sector like bars and restaurants. Both species are known to carry some pathogenic bacteria, however there is no proven evidence of direct human disease transmission.

Where they go to and from is the issue, walking around non-sterile environments, over foods stuffs, around drains and dirty pipework then walking on food preparation surfaces and prepared foods is where the bacterial transmission arises.

While the Oriental is not a great climber compared to the german species both will make their way to food preparation surfaces with ease. Both are also able to reach great heights in dwellings such as tower blocks and offices by following pipework and ducting.

Newer control methods compared to older standards residual spray treatments are fantastic. while there is still a place for sprays a more strategic approach is often required. monitoring points and gel baits with several visits are the norm to gain control. In some cases night inspections may be recommended.

All development stages of the German Cockroach on a Roach Hotel

In terrace rows of restaurants and takeaway establishments it is often that especially the german species can make their way from property to property with great ease and this must be taken into consideration when surveying, equally, the oriental cockroach will and can populate external areas arounds drains and bin storage areas in these environments. Again extra care when surveying must be taken to ensure that both internal and external locations are inspected.
