Common through out the Britain and the mainland. The varigated Carpet Beetle can simply arrive in domestic homes simply from flying through a open window or can infest old birds nests within the roof space and makes its way down into the dwelling. While the adult is harmless the larva affectionally know as a “Woolly Bear” will happily feed on clothing, furs and fabric and if allowed to reach infestation levels can be very destructive.

There are several species of the same Anthrenus order including the Common Carpet Beetle (Anthrenus scrophulariae), the Furniture Carpet Beetle (Anthrenus vorax) and the Museum Beetle (Anthrenus museorum) and broadly they are similar to the Varigated Carpet Beetle, however the museum beetle lives upto its name and is know to cause serious damage to museum specimens like stuffed animals, furs and skins.
When carrying out a control treatment it is important to remove and destroy infested materials, tho clean thoroughly paying special attention to all cracks and crevices ensuring removal of all larva and associated debris then to apply a residual spray treatment again paying special attention to cracks and crevices, carpet edges, skirtings and carpet folds.
