Biscuit Beetle (Stegobium paniceum)

The worldwide found beetle is a serious food industry, large food retailer, small corner shop and pantry pest. It has the ability to breach a wide range of food packaging and through storage, transportation and flight the biscuit beetle can spread rapidly.

In the domestic environment they can spread from packet to packet with ease often infesting several stored products at once as products are either stacked or crammed into cupboards and pantry’s. Biscuits, cereals, powders and stock products are all on the menu. Small penetration holes will be noticed in packaging.

In the domestic environment the source of the infestation can sometimes be found by simply working your way through product where the beetles are more in number, however it is advised that all stored products are removed and destroyed and a extensive clean with disinfectants before any insecticidal control methods are considered. More intense monitoring, cleaning, use of pheromone traps and fumigation is required in larger store areas and industrial environments and the use of specialist companies are advised in these situations.
