🐀 Rats in the UK: How Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Keeps Them Out — Safely and Effectively
Rats are a growing problem for homes and businesses across the UK — and the last thing anyone wants is to discover signs of them inside their property. At Rattraxs, we use Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to tackle rat infestations in a smarter, safer and more sustainable way than traditional methods.

Inspection and Identification
The first step in any IPM approach is a thorough inspection. I don’t just throw down bait and walk away, I investigate:
• Where the rats are getting in
• Why they’re attracted to your property
• What environmental conditions are helping them thrive
This gives me the information I need to build a control method suited to your job.
Prevention and Proofing
Once I know how the rats are getting in, I seal off entry points to prevent future infestations. I focus on:
Establishing the point of entrance through visual inspections, ladder inspections, CCTV Surveys of drainage as well as the standard full property and surrounding area inspection.
This is where IPM shines — I aim stop the problem at the source, not just treat the symptoms and risk the infestation reoccurring.
Monitoring and Control
If an active infestation is confirmed, we carefully select the most appropriate control methods, such as:
Non-toxic traps – Traps are always a viable option not matter the type of infestation being controlled, however in the event tracking or tracing the rats movements traps are not deemed the best option.
Live monitoring systems – The use of Wifi CCTV units can be installed into the loft space if deemed necessary, however once a rat has been confirmed to simply record the rats provides little if any further control information. A Camera unit may be deemed necessary for larger infestations or to simply monitor traps placed.
Rodenticides as a last resort – used legally, responsibly, and in line with CRRU guidelines are a effective tool, however at Rattraxs I will always attempt to use the most efficient method of control but also allow me to track the route of the rodent. However, chemical control is always deemed the last resort.
Rodenticides – Rodenticide selection is based on several factors and is based on various assessments carried out on site. A risk Hierarchy is implemented on each site before the use of chemical control is considered.
I will continue to monitor activity to ensure the infestation is under control, adapting our plan as needed.
Long-Term Solutions
Once works have been completed it is important that the infestation is monitored over a set period of time.
Several follow up visits may be required after the initial site inspection.
Advice if deemed necessary is given going forward.

I believe in solving the problem without over-relying on poison, protecting wildlife, pets, children and the environment on the whole. ** When Chemical control is deemed necessary the bait selection is the one least negatively impactful on the non-target risks.
