The Cluster fly is a ‘field’ insect, its life cycle is dependant on weather conditions. as per routine under normal weather conditions they will have two generation cycles per year and up to four generations if there is a hot summer that year.
In Autumn they can become a nuisance pest when they enter some buildings in large numbers to hibernate, they can squeeze through gaps in widow frames, but they mainly head towards the loft space entering under roof tiles and other openings. In the spring they can become as equally a pest when they awake from their winter slumber and attempt to make their way outside.
Some buildings may only get a infestation once, but it is not uncommon for properties to have repeated infestations yearly. They can be very difficult to control, in the summer months they will harmlessly live outside so its only when they enter the property can treatments be carried out. Really it is a case of sealing what can be sealed, always taking care not to disrupt airflow.
Residual sprays, fogging with certain products and knockdown space sprays can be used, however a full inspection must be carried out before hand, if treating within the loft space great care must be taken as not to treat if there is a possibility of Bats or indeed Birds in the spring months.
